Washington Redskins safety, Sean Taylor was shot in his Miami home at approximately 1:45 A.M. Monday morning and was airlifted to a local hospital where he was in a critical condition.

The Pro Bowl safety had taken a bullet in his upper leg, reports the AP, damaging an artery, causing serious blood loss and loss of consciousness. According to his former lawyer, Richard Sharpstein, Taylor seemed to show signs of recovery when he squeezed a nurse’s hand late Monday night, but never regained consciousness thereafter.

The Miami Herald is reporting paramedics found Taylor with a gunshot wound to the groin. ABC-TV 10 in Miami says a family friend told them that Taylor was shot twice.

Taylor was later pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, this morning, a day after he was shot by an intruder at his home in Palmetto Bay.

Taylor’s girlfriend, Jackie Garcia, who was in the bedroom with Taylor when he was shot, could not be reached for comment.

Taylor’s father, Pedro Taylor, and his family issued a statement honoring Sean and saying funeral arrangements would be announced soon.

“It is with deep regret that a young man had to come to his end so soon,” Pedro Taylor’s statement said. “Many of his fans loved him because of the way he played football. Many of his opponents feared him, the way he approached the game. Others misunderstood him, many appreciated him and his family loved him. I can only hope and pray that Sean’s life was not in vain, that it might touch others in a special way.”

The couple had their first baby, who is is also named Jackie, last year. The baby slept in a crib in the bedroom with her parents and did not wake up during the shooting.

Richard Sharpstein, Taylor’s attorney, called his death “a tragic, horrible, unnecessary death — another example of the incessant violence in this city and this country.”

“It’s still early in the investigation and homicide detectives are still working this case,” Miami-Dade police spokesman Robert Williams said Tuesday. “They’re seeking anyone that will be able to help us, anyone that might have seen or heard anything is urged to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.”

The gunman remained on the loose.

“I’ve just always been a fan of that kind of humor. I just do what makes me laugh.”

That’s been the comedian’s credo since he turned professional in the late 1980s. Geechy Guy has been particularly busy doing that in 2007, as he’s been on the road with the “Every Station in the Nation” Comedy Jam. The tour comes Friday to Modesto.

The stations in question air radio’s syndicated “Bob and Tom Show.” Being a friend of the Indianapolis-based program has proven to be a lucrative career move for several comedians, as the show routinely sponsors national tours featuring recurring guests.

Geechy Guy first came to the attention of co-host Bob Kevoian in 1989 when he was performing as an opening act. This year, he has been keeping a road diary of sorts, visiting areas that carry “The Bob & Tom Show” and rehashing his experiences on air.

“This whole year with the tour has been great,” he said. “People say all the time that it must be really hard, but I usually do 150 shows a year. I just never had a name for it until now.”

A former magician and juggler, Geechy Guy settled on stand-up at the ripe age of 19, performing in competitions in San Francisco and Los Angeles and landing a spot on “Star Search.” Even in the competitive comedy environment of Southern California, Geechy Guy was determined to stick with it.

“The difference was I didn’t have a really good job to quit,” he said. “Tim Allen and I started around the same time, but he had a $30,000-a-year job; I was making 150 bucks a week delivering pizzas.”

The career has since taken Guy to Las Vegas, Reno, a two-year stretch of living in the Virgin Islands while performing on cruise ships, and now to the heartland of Kansas City, Mo.

While many stand-up comics rely on long stories and observations for their humor, Geechy Guy is still the king of the one liners. He holds the world record for telling 676 jokes in one hour. That’s roughly 11 jokes a minute, for those with nothing better to do than keep score.

“It’s not so much of a ’sit down and come up with jokes.’ It’s just the way my mind works and thinks,” Guy said. “Over 20-plus years I’ve learned to hone it, I’ll see a sign on the road or see something on TV or something in the news and come up with a joke about it.”
